Abstract: The behaviour of a high-temperature reactor in the case of failure of the total cooling is investigated for the process heat reactor PR 500 as an example. Under the assumption that all cooling systems including the emergency cooling fall and that a shutdown of the reactor immediately occurs, the time dependent temperature curve, resulting by afterheat production, is calculated for the whole reactor. In the case of an undamaged primary circuit and full cooling gas pressure, the calculations show that the afterheat can be removed by natural convection. When the coolant is stagnant, the whole afterheat has to be taken up by the reactor core. But even in this most unfavorable case the fuel elements are not endangered.
